Company Nine opens its smart factory, rolling off an electric two-wheeler every 36 seconds
In mid-April, it was drizzling in Changzhou. At the gate of the No. 9 factory, the head of the factory pointed to the new factory built to the fifth floor, and said that the capacity of electric two-wheelers is expected to reach 3.5-4 million units this year - nearly doubling the capacity.
At present, No. 9 has three factories in Changzhou. Among them, the annual capacity of the electric two-wheeler plant can reach 2.5 million units. The first phase of the plant is under construction and is expected to start production by the end of this year.
Inside the factory, there are more than ten assembly lines on one floor. A car is on the line at this end of the assembly line, after more than 100 meters and hundreds of employees. When it came off the line, it had become an assembled electric vehicle. There are several key positions marked on the assembly line, which involve key operations such as tightening the handlebars.
The worker uses a fixed torque screwdriver to tighten the screws. The head of the factory who led the explanation reminded that under the production line, there was a green light at the feet of the workers. Only when the production line PLC control system recognizes that the torque is up to standard and the green light is on, the workpiece will be transmitted to the next station. Compared with the traditional production mode, there is also an MES whole-process monitoring system for vehicle manufacturing that can code and trace each key component to ensure that each component can be correctly assembled. In addition, No. 9 company has invested nearly 30 million yuan to introduce automation equipment for electric vehicle factories. In terms of warehouse management and logistics transportation, the factory introduced WMS warehouse management system and TMS material management system respectively, the former can code all parts and assembled vehicles into the warehouse, convenient for rapid delivery, the latter through intelligent order, delivery reservation and other functions, greatly improve the efficiency of logistics and transportation.
Next to the roaring assembly line, the head of the factory said that the current production of the factory has reached the level of the peak season last September, and has doubled year-on-year. Several media reporters surrounded him and asked, How many sales are expected this year? The person in charge smiled and said he only knew that the factory capacity had reached its peak.
Not only has production and sales increased, but the average price of the products of No. 9 company has also increased slightly. In 2023, the average price of No. 9 electric vehicles will reach 2,876 yuan, the highest among the major electric two-wheeler brands. At the same time, research and development has not stopped. At the NVIDIA GTC conference that closed shortly after, No. 9 also demonstrated Nova Carter AMR, an autonomous mobile robot developed by the two sides.
At the brand Open Day, Gao Lufeng, founder and chairman of No. 9 Company, answered media questions in detail. He mentioned that in order to launch its first electric vehicle product, the company has prepared for two years to improve the user experience with "true intelligence." For example, refer to Tesla, do a keyless unlock function for electric vehicles; Also for the 4000 yuan level of electric vehicles, plus tens of thousands of yuan high-end motorcycles will use the TCS traction control system.
These smart features translate into sales. Xu Peng, secretary of the board of directors of No. 9 Company, gave an example of how he observed that some delivery workers were also riding the No. 9 electric vehicle. Takeaways were originally price sensitive people, but the No. 9 electric vehicle has an automatic unlocking function, which is convenient for takeaways to unlock things when they hold things in both hands, "more runs will save a single time."
From the balance vehicle to the all-terrain vehicle, the product form varies greatly, but there is a unified product logic inside. Gao Lufeng described the company's positioning, No. 9 is a smart mobility company, focusing on the field of short and medium distance transportation and service robots. For example, he said, 40 percent of car travel demand is within five kilometers. In the long run, Nine's products are meant to replace the functions of these cars.
Supporting multiple categories of products relies on supply chain advantages. The person in charge of the factory mentioned that the manufacturer of some parts of the electric vehicle is within dozens of kilometers. Based on supply chain advantages, No. 9 company added a monocular vision sensor for shared electric skateboards, which increased the cost "very little", while recognizing lane lines and issuing alerts, so as to win more orders in overseas markets.
There's also Nova Carter AMR, an autonomous mobile robot developed in partnership with Nvidia. Mr Gao said robot startups could produce 5,000 units a year, and with No. 9's mobile chassis corresponding to a supply chain of 5m units, "there is no way [robot startups] can compete."
As a result, the product methodology of Company 9 is extended: to find the edge innovation opportunities in the mature track, from the edge to the center, and improve the user experience with technological innovation.
Under the guidance of this methodology, No. 9 company started from the balance vehicle and successively launched electric scooters, electric two-wheelers, all-terrain vehicles, commercial distribution robots, intelligent lawn mowers and other products. And, these products have achieved good sales - balance vehicle cumulative shipments of 4 million units, electric scooter cumulative shipments of 12 million units. In 2023, 1.47 million electric two-wheeled vehicles were sold, with a single revenue of 4.23 billion yuan, an increase of 74.9%.
