Whether the stepper motor or servo motor needs to be equipped with brakes
The brake of the stepper motor or servo motor is a safety device, the main function is to provide enough static locking torque for the drive motor shaft in the vertical motion mechanism, to prevent the motor shaft without brake from being in a non-locked free state when the system unexpectedly fails, and the load falls due to gravity.
For stepper or servo motors with brakes, the brake must be released when working (generally achieved by connecting 24V power to the brake coil). When the motor does not rotate during power-on, the position of the motor shaft is locked by magnetic force. The motor stops running by the control command, not by the brake to stop the motor.
In general, horizontally moving mechanisms do not need to choose a motor with brakes, while vertically moving mechanisms are recommended to use a motor with brakes. The following two vertical motion situations can be considered without brakes, but need to be carefully calculated to fully assess the safety risk:
1, vertically mounted trapezoidal lead screw transmission mechanism, if the lead of the trapezoidal lead screw is small, it can be reliably self-locking, and the motor does not need to have brakes.
2, vertically mounted ball screw transmission mechanism, if the lead of the lead screw is small (such as 2 or 4mm), and the load weight is light (such as 1-2 kg), due to the large friction torque of the ball screw can prevent the load from sliding, the motor does not need to have brakes.
